My Trip
[Croatia] - Hvar Island [Croatia] - Dubrovnik [Croatia] - Mostar [Bosnia-Hercegovnia] - Sarajevo [Bosnia-Hercegovnia] - Budapest [Hungary] - Lake Balaton [Hungary] - Bratislava [Slovakia] - Vienna [Austria] - Prague [Czech Republic]
My Top Tips
1. I have a length of string so you can tie open windows on hot trains.
2. Always have plenty of water and food with you for long trips.
3. Always get to the train early enough so you can try & get a compartment to yourself, strategically place your backpacks so no-one else can get in there.
4. Try and plan for you train to get into your destination in daylight as it is always easier to navigate in the day.
5. Try and make the most of overnight trains to save on accommodation
6. Make the most of air conditioned trains, trust me they are a godsend!
7. ALWAYS have a roll of toilet paper with you; you don´t want to get caught without any.
8. Be careful but try opening the door of the train & sitting down watching the scenery go past.
9. Take a pack of cards, it is a great way to meet locals
10.Take wet-wipes to clean yourself up on long trips because you can feel quite dirty
If you have 4 weeks I'd suggest..
Start in Llublijana, Slovenia and spend a couple of days there then make your way to Lake Bled. After that head to Croatia and when you get to Split do the seven islands in seven days trip down to Dubrovnik down the Dalmatian coast. Then make your way through Bosnia and Serbia visiting Mostar, Sarajevo and Belgrade. From Belgrade make your way to Bucharest and spend the night being chased by gypsies and packs of stray dogs, then make your way to Transylvania and explore the small towns. After Romania make your way down to Bulgaria and spend a few days on the beaches of the black sea. Then finally make your way to Istanbul and spend some time in this amazing city.
If you have 8 weeks I'd suggest..
Make your way east through turkey and explore the country for around a week. Before turning down towards the coast and making your way back towards Greece and spend a couple of weeks Island hopping. Then finally getting the ferry to Italy and spending the final week probably in Rome.
