Physiotherapy Work Experience in Brazil

This work experience placement enables you to concentrate on your specific area of interest whilst living in the vibrant world of Brazil's colourful border town, Foz do Iguaçu.

On this project, you can concentrate on the area of your choosing, or gain experience in several areas:

  • Medical Physiotherapy
  • Physiotherapy for people with physical disabilities...
  • Sports Physiotherapy

Travellers WorldwideThis project is open to both volunteers with physiotherapy qualifications, and those who simply have an interest in the field. We will place you at the centre/s where they can best use your skills and meet your needs. There is no minimum length of time you can take part in this project for - you are welcome for as little as 2 weeks, up to 6 months.

During this project, you’ll get the opportunity to work at two or three different locations in and around Foz. This will allow you to experience physiotherapy in Brazil in a variety of settings.

During your work, you will be watching the physiotherapist at work and giving them help in whatever capacity they ask. The Brazilian physiotherapists will be responsible for all treatments, and you’ll be shadowing them at all times.

Medical Physiotherapy - at a hospital

The Poliambulatório hospital is open to anyone in the community who needs free care, and has benefited hundreds of people around Foz since its opening. The hospital has several departments, and Travellers volunteers are currently helping out here in many different ways.

The hospital does a lot of work within the community around Foz as well as in the hospital building itself. Physiotherapists often visit patients at home, either to treat them or to monitor them as part of an aftercare program. You’ll often be able to accompany the physiotherapist on these visits, and so you’ll have the opportunity to visit families around Foz. This part of the project is pretty special, as you’ll be able to experience what life is like in the shanty towns around Foz, get to know the local people and really play a part in helping them recover from illnesses.

At the hospital, you will be assisting a qualified physiotherapist in caring for people at the hospital who have injuries and need to receive physiotherapy in order to re-gain health and mobility.

Physiotherapy for people with physical disabilities - at a care centre

Travellers WorldwideNosso Canto is a school for disabled people from all walks of life. The centre’s philosophy is that all disabled people have the right to receive the care they need - even those who can’t afford expensive care homes. Most of the students here come from very underprivileged families, and so the love and care you can give them is even more important.

Students of all ages come to the centre - from babies to adults. Most suffer from mental disorders like Downs Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism or Hydrocephaly. The aim of the centre is to help these people study, develop life skills, relax and enjoy themselves.

Nosso Canto is a reasonably small institution with a bubbly and friendly staff who are in desperate need of help in caring for the students here. The centre is funded almost entirely by donations, which makes it much harder to find employees as they can only offer them a low wage. Your work here will be enormously valued and appreciated by both the staff and the students.

At Nosso Canto you will again be assisting a qualified physiotherapist. Here you will be working with the children and adults, who have various disabilities, assisting them with physio and mobility exercises. You will primarily be working with children with cerebral palsy.

Sports Physiotherapy - at a sports centre

Centro de Convivencia Leonel de Moura Brizola (Centro de Convivencia for short!) is part of a project developed by the local Government which encourages school students to take part in extracurricular activities. The centre has a really good infrastructure to run courses in many activities, mostly sports related, for the students at the school next door (which is linked to the centre as part of the Government project). These students attend the centre in the afternoons, after their general lessons have finished.

Activities that take place at the centre include sports (indoor football, basketball, volleyball, swimming, martial arts and more), dance, music, chess and IT. The students can take lessons in all these activities, then if they really excel in one area, or discover an area of particular interest, they can focus in on that activity. However, the general objective of this institution is to teach the students all kinds of sports - something that is not possible in regular school because of the lack of professionals, infrastructure and time.

The sports centre has physiotherapists working with the students to help them prepare themselves for sporting events and recover from injuries, and you will be assisting them with their work.

Travellers WorldwideWhy not combine your placement in Brazil with any of the following:

  • Learn, practice and play the beautiful fight/dance/art of Capoeira
  • Music courses (a variety of local percussion/styles for you to choose from)
  • Study Portuguese - immerse yourself in the language and be amazed at the effects it brings!
  • Photography courses
  • Care and crèche work
  • Dance and sports coaching

Accommodation and food in Foz do Iguassu

Our users say...

"I have really enjoyed living in Foz, because it is a really good place to see everyday life in Brazil. I think it´s a better place to learn Portuguese than Rio because there are fewer English speaking people. Both sides of the falls are amazing and there is always clubbing in Argentina or shopping in Paraguay to fill a weekend. The people of Foz, like all Brazilians, are really welcoming and will always help if they can" Volunteer Hayley Panton on what it's like to live in Foz
